Cesium joined our colleagues and partners in San Jose, California, for NVIDIA GTC 2024 in March. 

This was my first time attending GTC, the first in-person one since 2019. In that time, quite a lot changed, with the expansion of digital twins and the growth of AI bringing us new tools and technologies. From the opening keynote through the conference sessions, meetings, and events, the energy of more than 18,000 attendees was palpable. 

Over 12,000 attendees packed the GTC keynote inside the SAP Center.

The session lineup was impressive, hosted by a variety of industry leaders, with several focused on advancing 3D geospatial technology and digital twins across architecture, engineering, environmental, and industrial markets. It was inspiring to see how engineers are integrating 3D Tiles, Cesium’s ecosystem, OpenUSD, and NVIDIA Omniverse to build valuable solutions. Now all of the sessions from GTC are available to watch free and on demand. This includes the sessions highlighted here.

Digitizing the World’s Largest Industries with OpenUSD and Generative AI

Cesium’s CEO, Patrick Cozzi, participated in a panel of enterprise leaders to provide an update on industrial metaverse projects. The progress of industrial digitalization was discussed, with a focus on the art of balancing what is possible with what is actually needed. Patrick was joined by leaders from Amazon Robotics, Jaguar Land Rover, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Siemens Digital Industries Software, VentureBeat, and Wistron.

Cesium participated in GTC’s OpenUSD Day through the technical session led by Shehzan Mohammed, Cesium’s Director of 3D Engineering and Ecosystems. He shared insight into the creation of our Cesium for Omniverse extension. By leveraging NVIDIA Omniverse’s OpenUSD and Fabric, combined with 3D Tiles and glTF, Cesium supports high-fidelity streaming and rendering for global-scale digital twins using open standards.

Transforming 2D Imagery Into 3D Geospatial Tiles With Neural Radiance Fields

One of the most compelling GTC sessions was focused on a demonstration of a real-time process for taking 2D geotagged drone images and transforming them into high-resolution 3D Tiles. During this presentation, a development team from NVIDIA was able to process drone imagery through NeRFs and into 3D Tiles streaming via Cesium ion, ultimately shown within Omniverse via our Cesium for Omniverse extension.

Overall, GTC 2024 showcased the rapid evolution of digital twin technology and its integration with AI, highlighting the innovative strides made by industry leaders within the OpenUSD ecosystem. 

The conference underscored the role of platforms like Cesium in driving forward the digital transformation of industries as it continues to unlock new possibilities for creating and visualizing high-fidelity, global-scale digital twins.

Cesium World Bathymetry: A global bathymetry and topographic terrain tileset that enables 3D visualizations, simulations, and analytics by fusing multiple data sources into a single tileset. The Cesium Ecosystem Grant Program is our commitment to supporting open source contributions, game-changing collaborations, and educational advancements that address challenges and opportunities in 3D geospatial. 

First announced in March of 2023, the Cesium Ecosystem Grants Program awarded 7 recipients who have made contributions to the 3D geospatial ecosystem; including making 3D tiles available on QGIS, Cesium Native availability on OSGEarth and open source 3D geospatial education that lowers the barrier to entry for next-generation innovation. 

We also recently announced Cesium Grants JAPAN 2024. 

Changes to the program in 2024 include the addition of quarterly application deadlines. Applications will open quarterly and will remain for 2 months at a time with a subsequent review period. As of today, applications for the first round of the year are now open and will close on February 29, 2024. Decisions on applications will be made by the end of March.

Cesium, Unreal Engine, and Google's Photorealistic 3D Tiles enables realistic visualization and simulation

Available as 3D Tiles, the OGC open standard created by Cesium, Google’s data covers over 2,500 cites and 49 countries. Using Unreal Engine, users can add and interact with massive models, add procedural content like trees and foliage, simulate traffic activity, and more. Thanks to open source Cesium for Unreal, users can orient their projects in precise geospatial context, enabling the creation of city-scale digital twins for use across industries. 

Cesium for Unreal v2.0 is coming soon! Keep an eye on the community forum for the announcement of a Preview release.

Cesium was proud to continue our long tradition of participating in SIGGRAPH, the premier conference in computer graphics, as it celebrated 50 years. After half a century of technological advancement, we love SIGGRAPH because it is community-driven and people-focused.

OpenUSD and its interoperability with glTF, digital twins at scale, and generative AI were major topics at SIGGRAPH 2023.

With the long list of sessions, the recent formation of the Alliance for OpenUSD, of which Cesium is a member, and NVIDIA's OpenUSD Day, we knew OpenUSD would be a huge topic. USD is a way to achieve cross-tool and cross-industry interoperability. This makes it a meta-topic that spans AI, game design, architecture/engineering/construction (AEC), and more. Many of us have spent significant parts of our careers dealing with data exchange between tools. The prospect of putting that enormous pool of time to more impactful use seemed to be fueling much of the interest.

As part of NVIDIA OpenUSD Day, Cesium's Sean Lilley gave a presentation focused on how to bring geospatial data via 3D Tiles for global-scale digital twins in NVIDIA Omniverse. The interest in the talk exceeded capacity with a considerable line of people hoping to get in. Cesium CEO Patrick Cozzi moderated the Birds of a Feather panel "The State of 3D Asset Interoperability using USD and glTF" organized by the Metaverse Standards Forum. 

The panelists offered insight on how to use both USD and glTF to deliver rich and efficient experiences in an OpenUSD ecosystem that takes advantage of glTF's strengths. 

Guido Quaroni, Senior Director of Engineering at Adobe 3D&I, shared advice on how USD and glTF can best interoperate. Henrik Edström, Distinguished Architect, Graphics, Autodesk, detailed paths to material interoperability across USD and glTF. Eric Haines, Distinguished Engineer, NVIDIA, offered his perspective and insight as an advanced user. Alexey Medvedev, AR Tech Lead, Meta, described collaboration paths for glTF and USD. The session’s popularity was a testament to interest in this topic. 

Cesium’s Adam Morris also presented on glTF in the Birds of a Feather session "Geometry, Textures, and Workflow - Optimizing glTF." It covered how to optimize glTF both internally and through 3D Tiles. Again, the room was full and the crowd was engaged, showing strong interest in leveraging glTF. Cesium's Lisa Bos presented at the Birds of a Feather session "Cartographic Visualization (CARTO)," a recurring Cesium tradition now in its eleventh year. Lisa was joined by Rex Hansen, Esri; Don Brutzman, Naval Postgraduate School; Nicholas Polys, Virginia Tech; and Mike McCann, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Patrick Cozzi contributed to the Practitioner session "ACM SIGGRAPH Practitioners: Research to Practice: Getting There and Back Again." It offered insights, tips, and inspiration for researchers and engineers to work more fluidly together.

Last but not least, Cesium co-sponsored the well-attended Khronos Group & Metaverse Standards Forum Reception. It was an evening of great food, drinks, and the exchange of ideas across hundreds of people. We would provide a photograph of the many Cesium T-shirts up for grabs, but they were gone too fast.

SIGGRAPH 2023 was an exceptionally full week of technological advances and creative achievement that was both inspiring as well as informative as we push for advances in geospatial visualization and digital twins. The Cesium for Unreal demo enables the user to explore nine locations or free roam anywhere on the globe in a variety of modes (third person, ground vehicle, drone, etc.).

Or try your hand at a game built with Cesium for Unreal and real-world data of Los Angeles, California. 

CesiumJS provides 4D visualization for operations use cases such as analysis, planning, common operating picture (COP), and rehearsal. Together with Maxar and OpenSensorHub, we’re leveraging 3D Tiles Next and the One World Terrain Well-Formed Format to enable 4D visualization and tooling for measurements, line of sight, viewshed analysis, and more.

Cesium 4D for Operations

3D Tiles Next is a set of extensions for streaming interactive 3D at scale that improve the ability to:

run massive simulations and analytics via spatial indexes

integrate with the glTF software and extension ecosystem

The extensions for 3D Tiles Next enable streaming game-like geospatial experiences to the open metaverse across devices, including current and future VR and AR wearables. 3D Tiles Next takes advantage of 5G and compute both at edge and in the cloud, to improve 3D geospatial experiences in an open and interoperable ecosystem. 

In developing 3D Tiles Next, we collaborated closely with Maxar to ensure the extensions will serve the modeling and simulation community’s needs for efficient runtime terrain for training, simulation, and operations.

Cesium + Exyn: CesiumJS demo built with our friends at Exyn, featuring high-resolution insets within global context and analytical tools like line-of-sight and uncertainty picking, plus place and adjust sensors. This demo combines point cloud data from Exyn with photogrammetry from Maxar, Nearmap, and Bentley Systems. 

Cesium and NVIDIA collaborate to showcase a demo built on open standards and interoperability connecting different platforms for modeling, simulation, and operational use cases to support the metaverse. This demo features geospatial data from Cesium as 3D Tiles streamed into NVIDIA Omniverse, combined with NVIDIA Omniverse’s simulation capabilities to showcase a rocket launch scenario from Cape Canaveral and the situational awareness and operational environment around rocket launches.

Brady Moore, Cesium's Director of Mission Support, will be speaking in the 2022 Photogrammetry, 3D Visualization & LIDAR (P3DL) Community of Practice Event at 12PM on Monday, August 8.

His brief, at the Unclassified//For Official Use Only level, is entitled, "Building a Data-First Approach to Modernizing Multi-Domain 3D Visualization."

Brady will briefly explain the latest developments in 3D Tiles Next's evolution as well as what's being made possible in open source visualization through Cesium Native.
